Etnaland – An aqua park beneath a volcano

Imagine you’re getting ready to whizz down a super-fast water slide, with the majesty of Mount Etna and the unique landscapes of Sicily in the background. The Etnaland Prehistoric Park is a fascinating journey back in time, where you can view realistic models of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. This place attracts both children and adults and there are interactive exhibitions and nature trails that tell the story of the Earth’s history and its ancient inhabitants.The park is open from April to September and is very popular, so book your tickets in advance, preferably online to avoid long queues and to take advantage of any discounts. Beyond the park

After your visit to Etnaland, be sure to plan a trip to Mount Etna, one of Europe’s few active volcanoes. The volcano’s trails offer unforgettable views across other-worldly landscapes. You can start your trip to Mount Etna fromRifugio Sapienza, where you can take a cable car up to about 2,500 metres. From there, special 4x4s can take you up to the volcanic zone at around 2,900 metres. For the more experienced, there are guided hikes that will take you to the top of the crater. During the tour you can admire the solidified lava fields, side craters and active fumaroles, which emit hot gases.

Catania, close to Etnaland, is a city full of baroque architecture and a lively atmosphere. Visit impressive monuments such as the Cathedral of St Agatha, Piazza del Duomo with itsElephant Fountain and the ancient Roman Theatre. Lively markets, such as La Pescheria, offer fresh produce and local delicacies galore. Restaurants here serve traditional dishes such as pasta alla norma, arancini and cannoli.

Catania is also famous for its nightlife, with numerous bars, clubs and cafes – especially around Piazza Bellini –  attracting locals and tourists alike. The city is full of energy and a variety of cultural events, concerts and festivals provide entertainment throughout the year.

Acqua Verde – a world of aquatic adventure

Acqua Verde in Cefalù was created on the site of a former olive pit. This remarkable park offers a wealth of water attractions to satisfy water adventure lovers both young and old. You’ll find everything from high-speed slides like the Kamikaze, to more family-friendly attractions like the lazy river.

The large wave pool is the perfect place to relax, while younger visitors will love the children’s area, with smaller slides and shallow pools.

For those who just want to take it easy , there are relaxing pools and hot tubs where you can lounge and enjoy the day. Acqua Verde regularly organises various events, such as acrobatic and dance shows.

Beyond the park

Cefalù is famous for its impressive cathedral, one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Sicily. Built in the 12th century, it has a majestic façade with two towers and an interior decorated with mosaics, which are considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. The chapel of the Holy Trinity and the cloister, which offers a moment of peace in the shadow of the historic walls, are also a must.

After your visit to the cathedral, take a stroll through the old town of Cefalù. The narrow cobbled streets are full of charming houses, shops selling local handicrafts and restaurants serving Sicilian specialities. You can also admire the many monuments, such as the mediaeval Lavatoio Medievale laundries, which are an interesting place to visit and learn about the daily life of the local inhabitants many centuries ago.
