Sun and Sights
A holiday in Cyprus is fun, regardless of when you visit. Averaging over 300 sunny days per year, the island boasts a diversity of attractions that draws visitors from around the world. Beach lovers and hikers will both experience a trip to remember, while those who love sightseeing can end their day’s exploration with a glass of local wine in one of Cyprus’ many picturesque villages.

Cypriot Cities
The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia is ringed by ancient Venetian walls that surround the city, with the renovated Paphos, Kyrenia and Famagusta gates making a beautiful background for photos. Be sure to visit Nicosia’s Archaeological Museum, which has collections dating back to Neolithic times. The Byzantine Museum features clothing and icons spanning the period between the 9th and 19th centuries, while the Archbishop’s Palace and National Theatre building are both also worth a visit. The beautiful city of Paphos is listed in its entirety by UNESCO as a cultural World Heritage Site. Be sure to visit the Tombs of the Kings and the 13th century Byzantine castle before relaxing on one of the area’s excellent golf courses.

One of the largest cities in Cyprus is Limassol, whose narrow streets and historic Old Town buildings are exceptionally charming. Make time to visit the nearby Kolossi Castle; this three-storey building was once the headquarters of the Order of St John and has a great rooftop viewing point. Both sugarcane and grapevines grew in this area, and the castle’s interior has clear divisions between its living and storage areas.

If you are a wine connoisseur, you will almost certainly have heard about Commandaria, an iconic Cypriot wine, and between Limassol and Paphos lies another must-see attraction — the Rock of Aphrodite. Animal lovers will enjoy a side trip to Akrotiri salt lake, where you can observe flamingos.

Living History
When visiting Cyprus, you should aim to visit some of its archaeological sites. One of the most popular of these is the ruins of the mediaeval city of Kourion near Limassol, where you’ll visit a museum and see beautifully-preserved floor mosaics and a reconstructed Greco-Roman theatre. Khirokitia is a neolithic settlement with defensive fortifications — this UNESCO World Heritage Site is located between Larnaca and Limassol. The city of Paphos is home to the ruins of the House of Dionysus and the fortress of Saranta Kolones. It is also famous for the Tombs of the Kings, dating back to the period between 4th-century BC and 3rd century AD. Contrary to its name, it wasn’t actually a burial place for rulers, but for aristocrats.

From Beaches to Mountains
Cyprus’ sunny weather is ideal for a day at the beach and fortunately you’re spoiled for choice! Cyprus’ most popular resort is Ayia Napa, where numerous beaches have gained Blue Flag certification for cleanliness. Nissi Beach is considered one of the area’s most beautiful, while Makronissos Beach has a small archaeological site nearby. Conditions here are perfect for water sports and diving enthusiasts can explore the wreck of the ferry Zenobia. At a depth of 42-43 metres this dive site near Larnaca attracts divers from all over the world. For a break away from the beach, try the Cactus or Sculpture Parks.

Visitors to Ayia Napa may wish to detour to the nearby Cape Greco, whose rocky landscape of limestone cliffs, mysterious caves and famous rock bridge is truly fascinating. Serious hikers will enjoy testing their stamina on the beautiful Troodos mountain range.

Winter holidays in Cyprus offer the opportunity to ski the range’s highest peak, Mount Olympus. Outside of snow season, the area is ideal for hiking and visiting monasteries, such as the famous 11th-century Kykkos Monastery, which preserves numerous icons and sculptures from the early Christian period, including one icon attributed to St Luke the Evangelist. The monastery route also includes the 13th century Trooditissa Monastery, while the Troodos Mountains’ slopes are an ideal spot to rest after a hard day’s hiking. Step into peaceful villages such as Lefkara, famous for handmade lace, or Omodos, where you can enjoy a delicious glass of wine. Experience authentic slow living — the locals will be more than happy to share some fascinating stories about their town.
